Challenge
Crude petroleum oil is a hazardous chemical. Importing it requires an automatic import licence, registration of the specific substance by the importing company, and inspection by customs at both the port of entry and the destination.
The buyer held no hazardous chemicals registration, which meant it could not lawfully appear on the declaration at all. The constraint was not the paperwork but the identity of the importer.
Approach
We acted as importer of record through our own licensed entity, and applied to the national chemicals registration centre to add crude petroleum oil to that entity’s own registered inventory. The declaration was then made in our own name, under our own registration.
We prepared the automatic import licence and the full hazardous chemicals documentary set, and attended both the port and destination inspections.
Outcome
The cargo cleared and was released without detention or re-export. Crude petroleum oil remains on our registered inventory today, alongside 54 other substances — it can be verified against our registration, number 31012601888.
